Joe Dolan Bridge - Some Technical Specifications

The Joe Dolan Bridge officially opened on September 6, 2010. It is the final link on the Mullingar orbital road and diverts traffic from the Westmeath town, a move the council hopes will improve quality of life and increase business opportunities.


FACTS:
540m long (longest bridge in Irish Republic)


The 19 spans are made up of 171 reinforced concrete beams, all cast on site.


There are single traffic lanes, one each way, with cycle lanes and footpaths to each side.


Design and construction carried out by Jons Civil Engineering Company Limited.


10ft or 3.1m clearance for boats to pass under.


It is supported in circular hollow section piles (12 piles to a pile cap).


Underlying the bridge is 10m of soft peat and 20m soft silt.



The bridge was built at a cost of €12m.
